Why Are My Gums Bleeding? Causes, Treatment and When to Worry
Almost everyone has seen blood in the sink after brushing and decided it was nothing. It is extremely common, which is precisely why it gets ignored — common gets confused with normal. And they are not the same thing.
Healthy gums do not bleed. Not when you brush, not when you floss, not when you bite an apple. If yours do, something specific is happening, and at the stage most people first notice it, it is completely reversible.
The short answer: Bleeding gums are caused by inflammation from bacterial plaque at the gumline, not by brushing too hard. At the earliest stage — gingivitis — it is fully reversible with a professional cleaning and improved technique. Left untreated it progresses to periodontitis, where the supporting bone is lost permanently.
Bleeding means inflammation, not hard brushing
The usual assumption is mechanical: I brushed too hard, I flossed too aggressively. Occasionally true, but if the bleeding happens repeatedly and in the same places, it is not the cause.
What is actually happening is an immune response. Bacterial plaque sitting undisturbed at the gum margin triggers inflammation — blood vessels in the gum dilate and become fragile. So ordinary contact makes them bleed. Healthy gum tissue does not bleed under a soft brush. The instinctive reaction is to brush that area more gently, or skip it, which leaves more plaque and makes it worse. The correct response is the opposite: clean it thoroughly and gently every day. And the bleeding usually stops within one to two weeks.
It is very treatable at this stage
At this stage the condition is gingivitis — inflammation confined to the gum, with no bone loss yet. It is entirely reversible, and the treatment is unremarkable: a professional scaling to remove the tartar you cannot reach, plus a correction to your daily technique.
Most people are surprised by how quickly it resolves. Two weeks of proper cleaning at the gumline after a scaling and the bleeding stops. There is a window here, and it is a wide one — but it does close. The distinction between gingivitis and periodontitis is whether bone has been lost. And once it has, no amount of cleaning brings it back.
Left alone it reaches the supporting bone
Untreated, inflammation moves from the gum into the periodontal ligament and then into the alveolar bone that holds the tooth in its socket. Pockets deepen, bacteria colonise where no brush can reach, and bone is lost. This is periodontitis, and the bone does not regenerate.
What makes it dangerous is that it is usually painless. Teeth do not hurt while this is happening — they loosen. And by then treatment is deep scaling and root planing under local anaesthetic, sometimes surgery, sometimes extraction. Gum disease, not decay, is the leading cause of adult tooth loss. Risk is materially higher if you smoke, if you have diabetes. And there is well-established evidence linking periodontitis to cardiovascular disease and to poorer glycaemic control.
A clean plus better technique usually resolves it
For most people presenting with bleeding gums, the whole treatment is a scaling and polishing plus a technique correction — ₹800 to ₹1,500 here, in one visit.
The technique part matters as much as the cleaning. Bristles angled at 45 degrees into the gumline rather than flat against the tooth, small circular movements, two full minutes. And interdental cleaning daily with floss or an interdental brush. Around 40% of each tooth surface sits between the teeth where a brush does not reach. Which is exactly where bleeding usually starts. If bleeding continues after two weeks of doing all of this properly, come back — that suggests deeper pockets. And it needs measuring rather than more brushing.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for gums to bleed when flossing?
Not if it continues. Gums that have not been flossed regularly may bleed for the first few days as inflamed tissue is disturbed. And that settles within about a week of daily flossing. Bleeding that persists beyond two weeks means inflammation is not resolving, and that needs looking at rather than more flossing.
Can bleeding gums heal on their own?
Early gingivitis often improves with better cleaning alone. But if tartar has formed — and it usually has by the time bleeding is noticeable — brushing cannot remove it. And the bleeding will continue until it is professionally scaled off. If two weeks of thorough cleaning has not stopped it, it is not going to resolve on its own.
What deficiency causes bleeding gums?
Vitamin C deficiency does cause bleeding gums. But it is rare in India outside specific circumstances and is not the usual explanation. Plaque-induced inflammation accounts for the overwhelming majority of cases. Pregnancy, some medications including blood thinners. And blood disorders can also contribute — worth mentioning if bleeding is severe, sudden, or accompanied by bruising elsewhere.
Does smoking affect bleeding gums?
Yes, and in a way that is genuinely dangerous. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, so smokers' gums often bleed less despite having more disease — the warning sign is suppressed while the underlying bone loss accelerates. Smokers frequently present with advanced periodontitis and no history of noticing anything wrong. If you smoke, do not use bleeding as your indicator; get the pockets measured.
How much does gum disease treatment cost in Bangalore?

Can pregnancy cause bleeding gums?
Yes. Hormonal changes make gum tissue react more strongly to the same amount of plaque. And pregnancy gingivitis is common — typically appearing in the second trimester. It is not a reason to stop cleaning the area; the opposite. Thorough gentle brushing and a professional scaling during pregnancy are both safe and are the treatment. Untreated gum disease in pregnancy has been associated with poorer outcomes, so it is worth attending rather than deferring.
Is gum disease contagious?
The bacteria involved can be transmitted between people through saliva — sharing utensils, kissing — but developing gum disease depends on your own plaque control, immune response and risk factors rather than on catching it. It is not contagious in the way a cold is. What is worth knowing is that gum disease clusters in families, partly through shared bacteria and partly through shared habits. So if a close relative has lost teeth to it, get your own pockets measured.
What mouthwash is best for bleeding gums?
Chlorhexidine is the most effective, but it is a short-course prescription product, not a daily habit — extended use stains teeth and alters taste. Use it for the duration advised and then stop. For everyday use, a fluoride rinse at a different time from brushing is reasonable. But no mouthwash treats bleeding gums on its own: the cause is plaque and tartar at the gumline, and that needs mechanical removal.
Do bleeding gums cause bad breath?
Frequently, yes. The same bacteria driving gum inflammation produce volatile sulphur compounds. Which is what causes the smell — and periodontal pockets are an ideal environment for them. If bad breath persists despite good brushing and tongue cleaning, gum disease is the first thing to rule out. Treating the gums usually resolves it, where mouthwash and mints only mask it.
Can bleeding gums lead to losing teeth?
If left untreated, yes — gum disease rather than decay is the leading cause of adult tooth loss. The path runs from bleeding gums, to inflammation reaching the periodontal ligament, to loss of the bone that holds the tooth in its socket. That bone does not regenerate. The point at which teeth become loose is late in the sequence. And treatment then is far more involved than a scaling would have been.
How long after a scaling should bleeding stop?
One to two weeks, provided you are cleaning thoroughly at the gumline in that period — which many people avoid because the area feels tender. And that is exactly what delays it. If bleeding continues beyond two weeks of proper daily cleaning, come back. That usually indicates deeper pockets that need measuring and treating rather than more brushing.
Is gum disease linked to diabetes or heart disease?
The links are well established. Periodontitis makes blood glucose harder to control. And poorly controlled diabetes in turn makes gum disease progress faster — it runs in both directions. And treating the gums measurably helps glycaemic control. There is also a substantial body of evidence associating periodontitis with cardiovascular disease. If you are diabetic, tell us, and expect us to recommend a shorter recall interval than six months.
If your gums bleed when you brush, that is worth a check-up rather than a wait-and-see. It takes one visit to find out whether you are dealing with something fully reversible or something that has already started costing you bone.
