Signs You Have a Cavity

A cavity is painless for a long time. By the time it hurts, it is usually deeper and more expensive to fix.

Sensitivity to sweet, hot or cold

A short, sharp twinge when something sweet or cold touches one particular tooth is the most common first sign.

A dark spot or a visible hole

Brown or black marks in the grooves of a back tooth, or a small hole you can feel with your tongue.

Food packing in the same gap

If food wedges between the same two teeth every meal, there is usually a cavity on one of the touching surfaces.

A rough or catching edge

A chip or a broken edge that catches your tongue or your floss. Repairing it early keeps it a filling rather than a crown.

An old filling that has darkened

Old silver fillings can leak or crack around the edges. A stained margin is worth checking even without pain.

Nothing at all

Most early cavities have no symptoms. They are found on examination, which is why the six-monthly check matters.

The Appointment

What Happens When You Come In

A straightforward filling takes about 30 minutes from start to finish.

  1. 1

Examination and, if needed, an X-ray

We check the tooth and the ones beside it. A small X-ray shows how deep the decay goes, which is what decides whether a filling is enough or whether the nerve is involved.

  2. 2

The exact price, before we start

You get the figure in writing once we have looked. If the tooth turns out to need a root canal or a crown instead, we tell you then, not halfway through.

  3. 3

    Numbing the tooth

Local anaesthetic, so the tooth is numb before anything else happens. A very small cavity sometimes does not need it at all.

  4. 4

    Removing the decay

Only the softened, decayed part is taken away. Healthy tooth is left alone, because every bit kept is strength you do not have to replace.

  5. 5

    Placing and shaping the filling

Tooth-coloured composite is bonded in layers, each set with a curing light, then shaped so it meets the opposite tooth the way the original did.

  6. 6

    Checking your bite

You bite on a marking strip and we adjust until it feels level. A filling left even slightly high is the usual reason a tooth aches afterwards.

Composite (tooth-coloured) filling₹1,000 – ₹3,000
Root canal (if the decay has reached the nerve)₹3,000 – ₹5,000

The range covers how large the cavity is and which tooth it is on. A small cavity on a front tooth sits at the lower end, a large one on a back molar at the upper.

Before After
Good to Know

Why a Small Cavity Is Worth Treating Early

Decay does not stop on its own. It moves through the hard outer enamel slowly, then much faster once it reaches the softer dentine underneath. The tooth usually gives no warning during that stage.

Caught while it is still in enamel or shallow dentine, the repair is a filling: ₹1,000 – ₹3,000, one visit, no injection in some cases. Left until it reaches the nerve, the same tooth needs a root canal and then a crown, which together cost several times more and take two or three visits.

That is the entire argument for a check every six months. It is not that the check finds something dramatic. It is that it finds the cheap version of the problem.

FAQ

Fillings, Questions Answered

At Dentick a tooth-coloured composite filling is ₹1,000 – ₹3,000. Where it falls in that range depends on how large the cavity is and which tooth it is on. The exact figure is given to you in writing after the examination and before treatment starts, and it is on our published price list like everything else.

The tooth is numbed first, so the procedure itself should not. You may feel pressure and vibration. A very small, shallow cavity is sometimes done without any injection at all. Mild sensitivity for a day or two afterwards is normal and settles.

About 30 minutes for a straightforward one, including the numbing. Two fillings in the same visit are usually possible if they are on the same side.

A composite filling in a well-cleaned mouth commonly lasts several years and often much longer. What shortens it is the same thing that caused the cavity, so the filling and the cleaning habit go together.

We place tooth-coloured composite. It bonds to the tooth, so less healthy tooth has to be removed to hold it in place, and it is not visible when you speak or laugh.

Only at the very earliest stage, where the enamel has started to demineralise but has not yet broken. Fluoride and a change in brushing can arrest that. Once there is a hole, the tooth cannot rebuild it and it needs filling.

Then a filling is not enough and the tooth needs root canal treatment, usually followed by a crown. We will tell you that at the examination, with the cost, before anything is started.

Yes, at BTM Layout 2nd Stage and at JP Nagar 7th Phase, both open until 8:30pm seven days a week.
