Veneers vs Crowns

What's the Difference?

Both restore appearance and function — the right choice depends on your tooth's condition.

Dental Veneers

Thin porcelain or composite shells bonded to the front surface of your tooth. Ideal for discolouration, minor chips, small gaps, or shape corrections. Minimal tooth reduction required. Best for cosmetic improvements on healthy teeth.

Dental Crowns

A cap that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth. Used when a tooth is significantly damaged, weakened by root canal treatment, or has a large filling. Provides full structural protection alongside cosmetic improvement.

Which Do You Need?

If your tooth structure is largely intact and the concern is mainly cosmetic, a veneer is usually the conservative choice. If the tooth is broken, weakened, or has been root canal treated, a crown is the stronger option. We will advise you honestly after examining your tooth.

Veneers & Crowns — Common Questions

Porcelain veneers require a small amount of enamel to be removed (typically 0.5mm) so the veneer sits flush with surrounding teeth. Composite veneers often require no tooth reduction at all. Once enamel is removed it cannot be replaced, which is why we always discuss whether a veneer is the most conservative option for your case.

Ceramic and zirconia crowns typically last 10–15 years or longer with good oral hygiene. Porcelain veneers last 8–12 years on average. Composite veneers have a shorter lifespan (5–7 years) but are easier to repair. Longevity depends heavily on avoiding habits like biting nails or opening packaging with your teeth.

Both procedures are performed under local anaesthesia. There may be mild sensitivity for a few days after your tooth is prepared, but this settles quickly. A temporary crown or veneer is placed while your permanent restoration is being fabricated.

In many cases, yes. We assess each tooth individually. If a tooth has a large filling or significant decay, a crown may provide better long-term protection. We will be clear about which option is right for your specific situation.
