What Is Laser Dentistry? Everything You Need to Know

The word “laser” in a dental context still surprises many patients — but laser dentistry has been clinically validated for over 30 years and is increasingly the standard of care for soft-tissue procedures. How does laser dentistry work?

A dental laser emits a highly focused beam of light energy at a specific wavelength. Different wavelengths interact differently with different tissues. The diode laser used at Dentick operates at a wavelength that is selectively absorbed by pigmented tissue (like diseased gum tissue and melanin) while leaving surrounding healthy tissue largely unaffected. When the laser contacts tissue, it vaporises cells precisely, simultaneously sealing blood vessels (coagulation) and sterilising the area.

Key benefits over conventional methods

Less pain — because many laser procedures do not require a drill or scalpel and involve less tissue trauma, local anaesthetic is often not needed. Less bleeding — the laser coagulates as it cuts, so soft-tissue procedures involve minimal to no bleeding. Faster healing — sterile, minimally traumatised tissue heals faster. Fewer bacteria — the laser kills bacteria at the treatment site, which is particularly valuable in gum disease treatment. No sutures — soft-tissue laser procedures typically do not require stitches.
