What Are Dentures? Types, Costs, and What to Expect in Bengaluru

June 23, 2026  ·  3 min read

Dentures are removable prosthetics designed to replace missing teeth and the surrounding gum tissue. They restore your ability to eat a wider range of foods, speak clearly, and maintain the appearance of a natural smile after tooth loss. Here is what you need to know before making a decision.

Types of dentures

Complete (full) dentures

Replace all teeth in one arch (upper, lower, or both). They rest directly on the gum tissue and are custom-made from impressions of your mouth. Conventional complete dentures are fitted 8–12 weeks after all teeth are removed, once the gums have healed and settled into their final shape.

Immediate dentures

Made before teeth are extracted, so you can wear them on the day of extraction and never be without teeth. Because they are made before the gums have healed, they require more frequent adjustments as the gum shape changes. They are usually considered temporary until conventional dentures are made.

Partial dentures

Used when some natural teeth remain. A partial denture replaces only the missing teeth and clips onto existing teeth for stability. Metal-framework partial dentures are more durable; flexible acrylic partials are more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing.

Implant-supported overdentures

A full denture that clips onto 2–4 dental implants placed in the jaw. The implants prevent the denture from slipping, dramatically improve chewing force, and preserve bone beneath the denture. The best of both worlds for many patients.

Denture costs in Bengaluru

At reputable dental clinics in Bengaluru, complete acrylic dentures typically cost ₹8,000–₹15,000 per arch. Flexible partial dentures are ₹6,000–₹12,000. Implant-supported overdentures range from ₹60,000–₹1,20,000 depending on the number of implants. Prices vary significantly with the quality of materials and lab work — it is worth asking specifically about the lab that fabricates the denture.

What is life with dentures like?

There is an adjustment period of 2–4 weeks while your mouth muscles adapt to the new appliance. Eating starts with soft foods and chewing on both sides simultaneously. Speech improves quickly as you adapt. Dentures are removed and cleaned nightly — never sleep in them long-term, as this increases infection risk and denture-related stomatitis.

When to consider implants instead

If you have adequate bone density and are a suitable surgical candidate, dental implants — either as individual implant-supported crowns or as anchors for an implant overdenture — provide a more stable, bone-preserving solution. Discuss both options with your dentist to make an informed choice.
