Metal Braces vs Ceramic Braces in Bangalore — Which Is Right for You?

June 27, 2026  ·  3 min read

One of the most common questions we get at Dentick is: “Should I get metal or ceramic braces?” The short answer is that both types straighten teeth with the same mechanism and similar effectiveness. The differences that matter are visibility, cost, durability, and a few practical considerations.

How braces work (both types)

Whether metal or ceramic, braces work by bonding brackets to your teeth and threading an archwire through them. The wire applies gentle, continuous pressure that gradually moves teeth into the desired position. Your orthodontist adjusts the wire every 4–6 weeks to maintain the appropriate force throughout treatment.

Metal braces — the facts

Metal brackets made from medical-grade stainless steel have been the workhorse of orthodontics for decades. They are the most affordable option, the most durable, and can handle the most complex corrections reliably. They are also the most visible — the classic “train tracks” appearance.

For patients who need significant bite correction, severe crowding, or complex tooth movements, metal braces remain the most reliable choice. They also tend to require slightly fewer emergency appointments for broken brackets (ceramic is more brittle).

Cost in Bengaluru: ₹25,000 – ₹45,000 for a full treatment course.

Ceramic braces — the facts

Ceramic brackets are made from tooth-coloured or clear alumina ceramic. They use the same archwire mechanism as metal braces but are far less visible at conversational distance. For adults and working professionals who want effective orthodontic treatment without the conspicuousness of metal, ceramic braces are the most popular option at Dentick.

The main trade-offs: ceramic brackets are slightly more brittle than metal and can be damaged by hard or crunchy foods. The ceramic can also pick up staining from tea, coffee, turmeric, and red wine over time — though the wire itself is usually metal and therefore stain-resistant.

Cost in Bengaluru: ₹35,000 – ₹60,000 for a full treatment course.

Which should you choose?

Choose metal braces if: cost is the primary consideration, you have a complex correction, or you do not mind the appearance during treatment (some patients embrace it).

Choose ceramic braces if: you want to minimise visibility during treatment, you are comfortable with the slightly higher cost, and you will avoid heavy staining foods and take care with hard foods.

In both cases, the most important factor is not the bracket material — it is the skill and experience of the dentist placing and adjusting them. Treatment duration for metal and ceramic is essentially the same for equivalent cases.

What about clear aligners?

Clear aligners (like Invisalign or similar brands) are virtually invisible and removable, but work best for mild to moderate corrections. For more complex bite issues, braces — metal or ceramic — typically give more predictable results. We will always give you an honest assessment of what each option can realistically achieve for your specific case.
